Johnson Public House delivers all-day breakfast and Kin-Kin coffee to Madison
Johnson Public House was one of the first coffee shops I ever visited after moving to town, and it’s absolutely one of the best coffee shops in Madison, WI. Period.
They strike the perfect balance between all of the things that I consider when recommending coffee shops around the Midwest - excellent coffee, fantastic food, and a wonderful atmosphere.
Stopping by JPH is an absolute must the next time you find yourself looking for one of the best coffee shops in Madison, WI.
Process
Head straight in and grab a menu from the little black bin labeled “Menu” as you will want food while you’re here. Trust me.
A quick glance to the left reveals the drink menu on the wall. The menu options are the classics. They are simple. Just the right quantity of offerings.
Want a coffee? Options here are drip, pour over V60, pour over Chemex (24 oz.), or cold brew. Your classics are of course available here: espresso, macchiato, corrado, americano, etc.
On the right hand side of the little menu you will see the sweeter options such as a mocha or miel, and an incredible hot chocolate. Cream and sugar on a little table under the menu board.
The only thing left to do is step up to the right of the espresso machine and place your order and then find a seat.
Drink and food orders come up super quick. When you’re done there’s a little service window towards the back near the bathrooms that you can set your dishes.
Coffee and Treats
I went with the 12 ounce V60 which featured a medium roast Honduran coffee from Kin-Kin. It was very good.
I also tried out the bacon egg and cheese breakfast sandwich on a bagel. Thick cut bacon, lots of it, and melty cheddar cheese wrapped around a friend egg. All working in harmony to create something that hits the spot ever so perfectly. Incredibly delicious.
I have ventured in to JPH dozens of times over the last decade or so… every single time up to this point I have gotten the breakfast bowl with ham and avocado. It, too, is incredible.
They also have a variety of sandwiches maybe more suited for the lunch or evening hours. Since I branched out this time, I think next time I’ll take a swing at their grilled cheese or Horsey Beef sandwich!
You absolutely cannot go wrong with any of the food items here. Of course, the coffee is great too!
Seating
JPH has four tables in the center of the cafe that will seat at least four people. You will find a bench that spans from the front all the way to the back of the shop along with eight tables for two. Lastly, a few stools line the front windows.
There has only been one visit in which I wouldn’t have been able to find a table. There’s just enough to support the traffic and remain cozy.
Atmosphere
As you enter the door you’re greeted by one of the most wonderful aromas known to humankind. The scent of breakfast food cooking on a flat top. Even if you had eaten before you arrived, your body and your senses will begin to tell you it is time to (at least) try again.
The music sends calmness through your system. Helping you get prepared for that next hour of work, to have that conversation with a long lost friend, or even just to relax after a long day.
On the coffee bar, the stainless steel glistens on the La Marzocco, and the Mazzer grinders sit at the ready.
Service
Ten or more years… So many visits… So many coffees… never a single time was there an experience that didn’t deserve every star.
They’re happy to answer any questions or confirm when you’re ordering your food about any options they offer and that you’re getting exactly what you want.
The pour over comes quick. They’re measuring out the beans, preheating the v60, and brewing your coffee by the time you are done paying.
Food is brought to your seat, the old fashioned way.
Genuine enthusiasm from the staff to create the best experience possible is prevalent.
Summary
You will be hard pressed to find a better coffee shop in the Madison area.
