Best Puerto Rican Restaurant in Chicago | La Sandwichera
CHICAGO

La Sandwichera Cafe is the kind of place that makes me think of some of my favorite spots when I am in Puerto Rico. A city sandwich shop tucked away in Humboldt Park, the heart of Chicago's Puerto Rican community, serving sandwiches on bread that tastes just like what you get on the island.
Steel and glass. Wooden tables. Soccer on the screens. And sandwiches that hold you over for hours. That's what you'll find at La Sandwichera Cafe. But if you can spare a few more minutes, let me tell you why this place deserves a spot on your must-visit list.

Process
We got street parking right across the road from the sandwich shop which was great. We arrived around 8am on a Saturday morning and it was easy to find a spot to park, a spot to sit, everything.
Once you place your order at the counter you can grab a seat and wait just a couple minutes for the sandwiches to be prepared. It's a simple process and the staff was super friendly and helpful. No fuss. No complications. Just good service that gets you fed quickly.
Food
We ordered "The OG" which has ham, egg, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. This sandwich hit the spot and was a proper solution for a starving body on the hunt for some breakfast. Sometimes you just need a classic breakfast sandwich done right, and The OG delivers exactly that.
Then there's "The Chancleta" which had roast beef, pastrami, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard, salsa loca, and hot peppers. They weren't lying when they said the peppers were spicy. It probably would have been better as a lunch or dinner sandwich versus breakfast, but it was incredible and I would do it again. When a sandwich is that good, you don't care if it's 8am or 8pm.
The bread was great. Just like the bread we get on the island when we visit. That alone tells you everything you need to know about the authenticity here. The portions are solid. They held us over for the rest of the morning, which is exactly what you want from a proper sandwich.
Seating
There's room for maybe 25-30 people to have a seat inside. A few wooden tables. Bar stools along the walls and windows. Then there's the bar itself. Some extra room for those that wish to stand, grab a sandwich and a drink, and catch a soccer game.
During the warmer months it looks like they also have some outdoor seating that can fit probably 20 more people or so. Perfect for enjoying your sandwich while soaking up the Humboldt Park atmosphere.
Atmosphere
It feels like a city sandwich shop, to be honest. The steel and glass shop front leads you into a spot with wooden tables and bar stools. Soccer playing on the screens. The sounds of sandwiches being assembled behind the counter. People coming in and out, grabbing food, catching up with neighbors.
It's the kind of place that serves as a neighborhood hub. Where you can grab breakfast before work or post up for a few hours on the weekend watching a game. Casual. Comfortable. Real.
Service
The staff was super friendly and helpful. They know what they're doing and they make the whole experience easy. Order at the counter, grab a seat, wait just a couple minutes, and your sandwiches are ready. Simple. Efficient. And done with genuine friendliness that makes you want to come back.
Summary
I really like these types of locations. The small ones owned by just one or two people. The passion for their craft is obvious and it shows through in the quality and authenticity of their food.
La Sandwichera Cafe sits in Humboldt Park, which is the main Puerto Rican neighborhood in Chicago. The area known as Paseo Boricua is the cultural, political, and economic hub for the city's Puerto Rican community. After knocking out those sandwiches we took a little self-guided walking tour of the neighborhood which features a large steel Puerto Rican flag that extends over Division Street as well as murals depicting the history of Puerto Rico.
The sandwiches here are legit. The OG delivers that classic breakfast sandwich satisfaction. The Chancleta brings serious heat with those spicy peppers and the combination of roast beef and pastrami. The bread tastes just like what you get on the island. The portions hold you over for hours.
But beyond the food, it's the complete package that makes this place special. Easy parking. Quick service. Friendly staff. A neighborhood atmosphere where you can watch soccer and feel like part of the community. And that authentic Puerto Rican flavor that transports you right back to the island.
If you're looking for real Puerto Rican sandwiches in Chicago, La Sandwichera Cafe delivers. Combine your visit with a walk through Paseo Boricua to see the iconic steel flags and murals. It's the kind of morning that reminds you why exploring neighborhood food spots is one of the best ways to experience a city.
I paid for this meal myself. All opinions are my own.
